Overview |
The principal program offered by the Canadian College of Osteopathy is a five-year part-time study in Traditional Osteopathy. In contrast to the current American model of Osteopathy, which has a strong medical component, Traditional Osteopathy is essentially European in origin and primarily has a manual basis. Traditional Osteopathy is a comprehensive blend of osteopathic philosophy, theory, methodology, osteopathic technique, clinical application and research. The five years of study consists of 34 courses, and 20 days of supervised clinical practice. Course material is presented at a pace and within a time frame that is conducive to learning, while still allowing the student to continue to earn his or her income. More importantly, this professional course of study allows students the comfort of integrating the material from each course into practice, before proceeding to the next one. During the program the student also begins to develop their research skills, culminating in an additional year of independent study that is strictly devoted to a research thesis. The necessity of completing a research component is a standard element of most recognized osteopathic programs throughout Europe , the home of Traditional Osteopathy. Anyone holding a degree in the biological sciences and who is currently licensed as a health care practitioner ( see pre-requisites ) is eligible to enrol. For candidates lacking the necessary perquisites, a supplementary program, termed pre-admissions, is available. |
