CONTINUING EDUCATION Introduction |
Introduction |
International Continuing Education Program Continuing Education is another foundation of the CCO's commitment to osteopathic education in Canada. The Canadian College of Osteopathy, through its membership in the Association of Traditional Osteopathic Colleges of Canada, offers ongoing educational seminars that rank among the top programs in the world. The CCO believes that an osteopathic education is a continuing process of learning. With this in mind, all students and seasoned graduates are able to participate in programs offered in Europe, Montreal and Toronto. All presentations are either given or translated into English. Leading the way, Montreal 's Collège d'Études Ostéopathiques has hosted 20 International Symposiums, invited more than 50 world-renowned guest speakers, and hosted delegates from over 20 countries. In addition to Osteopathic Manual Practitioners, researchers from the United States, Europe and Russia are also valuable contributors to the continuing education programs. Each year, these leading-edge researchers provide current research that explains the more elusive aspects of Osteopathy such as the Primary Respiratory Mechanism, the ability to learn embryology and palpation. Since 1998 the CCO in Toronto has hosted six successful, consecutive symposiums. Guest speakers have included: Viola Frymann, DO, FAAO, Gerald Lamb, DO (England), Colin Dove, DO (England), Steve Sandler, DO (British School of Osteopathy), Fred Mitchell Jr., DO, FAAO, Wayne English, DO, FAAO, and Bernard Darraillans, DO (France). Each of these Osteopaths has a minimum of 20 years experience, and in three cases, more than 40 years of osteopathic experience. In recent years guests at other ATOCC symposiums have included: Jean Pierre Barral, distinguished for his instruction in visceral normalizations; Fred Mitchell Jr., son of Fred Mitchell Sr., one of the co-originators of the Muscle Energy techniques; Harold Magoun Jr., son of Harold Magoun Sr., author of an authoritative book on cranial osteopathy, Osteopathy in the Cranial Field, as well as many other titles. Specialists in the field of pediatric Osteopathy, obstetrics, gerontology, and athletic therapy are also regularly invited to these symposiums. Osteopaths who are considered experts in embryology, cranial Osteopathy, fascial and myofascial release, and osteo-articular adjustment are also regular presenters at these international symposiums. Other presentations in the area of the role and treatment of stress related factors in Osteopathy, and the interrelationship of spiritual and emotional aspects of the patient's well being are also regular topics of interest. These seasoned Osteopaths and researchers also serve as the core of the International Jury, before whom the student of Osteopathy presents his thesis defence. This unique opportunity to present the student's original research ranks the CCO among the top osteopathic colleges in the world. Continuing Education opportunities are also available on a smaller scale throughout the academic year. Frequently, weekend courses or evening seminars are scheduled. The purpose of these seminars and post-graduate courses is to provide additional information that has been developed since the student's graduation or that appeals to a more specialized audience such as those that focus on the treatment of the elderly, infants or mentally ill. These classes are typically smaller than the symposium courses and thus provide some additional opportunities for the exchange of information and techniques. One of the most appealing features of these continuing education opportunities is the mingling of students, graduates and professors. Each recognizes that learning Osteopathy and particularly palpation is an infinite and ongoing, evolving process. This realization means that even the most inexperienced student is made to feel welcome, and the most experienced Osteopathic Manual Practitioner recognizes that he or she was once, and still is, in the process of learning. This humility is central to our work. |
